about Gyrfarm

First Baby Falcon Hatched from Alaskan Super White!

Allow me to introduce myself...

My name is Jim Robison and I am 'GyrFarm'.

When I was fourteen, I attended a falconry meet not far from my home and witnessed a prairie falcon kill a pheasant. It was a sight that was burned into my mind. Little did I know that my passion for falconry was going to come from this spark!

In 1980, I got my first hawk and in 1983 I trapped my first gyrfalcon. Since then, I have flown many falcons with the gyrfalcon being my favorite. I have been very fortunate to be able to travel throughout the United States in pursuit of our native grouse, game birds and waterfowl. A number of the birds I have personally flown for falconry have been placed into my gyrfarm breeding project.

I hope your next flight will be with a gyrfalcon from GyrFarm.

Thanks for your visit!

why choose Gyrfarm

Size and Color Does Matter

I have traveled great distances to aquire falcons that have the best body conformations. I have looked for falcons that were very large, and had striking color.

Flight Pen

At over 150 feet (46 meters) in diameter, and 20 feet (6 meters) tall, my flight pen is one of the largest in North America, giving the young falcons plenty of room to spread their wings.

This gives the young falcons the opportunity to be socialized in a large group. It shapes them mentally as they are always succssful. Plus, I am able to release prey into the flight pen so they learn to be predators.

I recently returned from Jim Robison’s gyrfalcon breeding project with a nice gyr/Peales female. The falcon I chose was parent reared and then “hacked” for 33 days in Jim’s large circular flight pen. It was easily trapped without disturbing the other dozen or so falcons in the pen. I began training it immediately and am delighted with it so far. Unlike other “room-reared” falcons I have handled, even those I bred myself, this falcon is remarkably fit and easy to handle. I look forward to hunting ducks and sage grouse with her soon.

Jim’s project will be producing white gyrfalcons for CITES export in 2015 and I expect his gyrs to be outstanding in every way. Jim’s approach to breeding and conditioning is well thought out and his dedication to producing fit, healthy, and psychologically well-balanced gyrs is exceptional.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Jim Robison for over 25 years. He is an outstanding artist and an accomplished game hawker. We have had many memorable hawking trips and he knows what it takes to make a great game hawk.

Two years ago I had the opportunity to fly an 1100 gm gyrkin that was raised by Jim. This gyrkin was flown successfully on sage grouse and sharp tailed grouse. This bird and others he has raised are aggressive game hawks but respond well to handling and manning. He has chosen falcons whose size and physical characteristics have made excellent grouse hawks and I am sure will be great on other quarry.

As a world class artist he knows how he wants his finished product to look and he has carefully selected his breeding stock to achieve this goal. Jim has invested considerable effort pursuing birds with the color, markings, size and physical attributes that you will find desirable.

As a pioneer in falconry telemetry since the 1970’s I have had the privilege of making acquaintance with countless falconers around the globe. At the same time I was fortunate to meet Jim Robison when we were both aspiring young falconers growing up in central Illinois. I have watched Jim fly a number of quality game hawks with an unsurpassed passion, infused with knowledge, experience and meticulous attention to detail. This same trait that has wrought Jim success in falconry is clearly evident in his renowned commissioned wildlife art carvings. Whether the art be a falcon or duck on the wing I continue to be amazed his otherworldly ability to spark wood to life. To see a piece in person is to touch the texture of a finely carved feather of which photographs can do no justice. Subsequently it is no surprise that he would also manage to assemble a gyrfalcon breeding project that produces what can only be described as the finest falcons to be found. Over the years he has culled his breeders to be only of the largest and whitest strains that genetically replicate. In addition his breeders having acclimated to the harshest Illinois weather extremes from subzero winters to 100 plus hot humid summers and have proven to be exceedingly healthy and disease free. The project replete with clean chambers and what may be the largest open air flight pen yields the most “passage” like captive bred falcons available. The falcons from Jim that I’ve flown were not only massive beauties but also powerful and consistently rigorous high flyers. If you are looking for large, white, healthy captive bred gyrfalcons with the qualities of a “wild trapped passage birds”, then I highly recommend Robison’s Gyrfalcons.
